FOOTBALL: Zamalek sack coach Mido after derby defeat to Al-Ahly

Mido, who turned out for clubs in England, France and Italy, was Zamalek’s star striker before retiring in 2013.

The club appointed him as coach for a six-month spell in January 2014. During his first season in charge, Zamalek finished third in the league and secured a place in last year’s Confederation Cup.

He also won the Egypt Cup, making him the youngest Egyptian manager to win a major trophy. But he was replaced in July 2014 by Hossam Hassan following modest results.

Under Jesualdo Ferreira in the 2014/15 season, Zamalek completed only the third domestic league and cup double in their history. But the Portuguese veteran resigned in November 2015 shortly after securing the honours. He was replaced by Marcos Paqueta in December 2015 but the 57-year-old Brazilian was relieved of his duties early in the new year.

Mido was reappointed on 4 January 2016. The 32-year-old started his second stint with four wins, but a draw and a defeat was followed by Tuesday night’s setback against Al Ahly who have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.
